History of Xarelto
Rivaroxaban, marketed under the trade name Xarelto, is among the newest in the category of drugs known as anticoagulants, or blood thinners. Xarelto was originally approved the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in patients following joint replacement surgery. The medication was designed to lower the risk of blood clots, and as a result, reduce the risk of stroke for patients with atrial fibrillation, or Afib.
Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a New Jersey-based subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, along with Bayer, the two companies responsible for the distribution of Xarelto, sought and received fast-track FDA approval for more general application of the drug. As such, the drug was approved for the treatment of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.
It is most commonly prescribed as an alternative to Coumadin and its generic equivalent Warfarin.
Damaging Side Effects
As with any anticoagulant, one of the potential side effects of Xarelto is internal bleeding. However, with drugs like Warfarin, such bleeding was found to be controllable. Xarelto, on the other hand, has shown an increased risk of irreversible and sometimes fatal internal bleeding. Other possible side effects include blood clots, embolism, hemorrhaging, and death due to loss of blood.
A growing number of claimants have posited that the makers of Xarelto failed to warn physicians and patients about the potentially deadly side effects. With proper warning, lawsuits are claiming, patients and doctors would have made different choices in the treatment of the presented conditions.
Your Possible Case
If you or a loved one has taken Xarelto and suffered an episode of severe internal bleeding, you may be able to file a claim against the manufacturers. Tomasik Kotin Kasserman is prepared to help you show that:
- Bayer and Janssen were aware of the potential dangers of the drug;
- Warnings and marketing did not clearly address the possible risk of uncontrollable bleeding; and
- You and your doctor were not made aware that there is no antidote or mechanism for reversing the bleeding or blood-thinning effects of Xarelto.
For now, Xarelto remains on the market and many patients may still be subject to potential danger. That is why we are prepared to work with you in the pursuit of justice, ensuring that your voice will be heard in this fight.
